When ominous weather heads for North Carolina's Hurricane Alley, electric cooperatives and their customers know they're in for trouble. But until a hurricane makes land fall, nobody knows for certain where the bulk of the outages will be. Jones-Onslow EMC was ready for anything when Hurricane Floyd slammed into the North Carolina coast last fall. The Jacksonville, N.C., co-op's new automated outage-management system recorded 250 simultaneous outages the moment they occurred. The co-op quickly started restoring power in what turned out to be one of the state's worst natural disasters. Co-ops have always had to deal with bad weather, and they all have some way of tracking outages and managing power restoration. What's different today is that customers aren't as patient as they used to be. They want their lights back on NOW!
