Downtime and equipment damage from power-quality problems cost American businesses 25 billion dollar last year. In fact, as the electricity era enters its third century, power quality is a major reliability issue. "Service reliability is very big,"says Randy Harnesberger, commercial marketing representative for Oklahoma Electric Cooperative in Norman, Okla. "It's almost as important as rates to some customers. Part of every proposal that I send out includes information about our service reliability .... I also include a list of references, two pages of key accounts." The four most common sources of power-quality troubles are natural events, normal utility operations, other customers, and customers' wiring and equipment. Experts estimate that 80 percent of all power-quality problems occur on the customer's side of the meter. But customers rarely see it that way. What they see is lost data, damaged equipment, blinking lights and electricians who blame the electric co-op if they can't solve or explain the problem themselves.
