Combined with advanced meter infrastructure, ZigBeeenabled devices could let co-op consumers participate directly in residential demand-response efforts. The consumer's side of the meter stands as the "last frontier" of the smart grid (see "Co-op Tech," page 32). Recently, attention has focused on active involvement by homeowners in demand-response programs--whether through smart thermostats or still-evolving home area networks--that monitor and control electricity consumption.
