Variation of the Composition of Hydrous Metal Oxide Hydroxides during Aging in Electrolyte Solutions

The variation of the composition of titanium(IV), zirconium(IV), iron(III), chromium(III), and indium(III) hydrous oxide hydroxide gels (HOHGs) upon aging in solutions of sodium chloride and sulfate was studied. The oxide: water and oxide: admixed ion ratios were determined. During aging for 2 h at 80 deg C, iron, zirconium, and indium HOHGs lose 20 to 60 percent of the initial total content of water, while in the case of titanium and chromium gels, no water is lost. The initial oxide: water ratio is close to 1: (80-130) for titanium and zirconium HOHGs and to 1: (170-230) for other HOHGs studied. The change in the composition of HOHGs losing water can be due to particle agglomeration upon linking oxide hydroxide polymeric molecules by hydroxo and oxo bridges and to the squeezing-out of some intramicellar water upon particle agglomeration. Slight changes in the composition of titanium and chromium HOHGs may be due to the formation of metastable microstructures immediately after the oxide hydroxide precipitated from a solution of a metal salt.
