Co-Rotating Twin Screw Extruders (CRTSEs) are particularly suitable for compounding process due to the excellent mixing properties, controllable mechanical and heat energy input, accurate feeding technology that allows feeding of all types of materials in solid, liquid or gaseous phase with a self cleaning vessel maintained at required pressure and atmospheric conditions. Steady progress in process capability of the CRTSE has given rise to high throughput rates resulting in economic viability and minimal degradation with respect to other processes. Although CRTSEs are best known for plastics compounding that involves kneading, chemical modifications involving a chemical reaction are also possible on this equipment such as preparation of reactive blends, grafting, partial vulcanization (TPV), chemical modification, and polymerization. Chemical reactions are generally allowed to occur at a rate that provides "end point" control over the process during manufacturing. Fast acting reactions describes a special process in which the entities undergo immediate chemical reaction. CRTSE is a unique continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with multiple conveying pumps and action vessels in series that has the ability for every surface to be constantly wiped clean. This makes the CRTSE ideally suited for fast acting chemical reactions that need greater control over residence time and constant wiping of surfaces to prevent run-away reactions offering advantages of process control and cost.
