Above and below the design load waterline, the thickness may taper to the thickness of the shell at ends at the freeboard deck and to the thickness of the flat-plate keel at the forefoot, respectively. Cast-steel stems of special shape are to be proportioned to provide a strength at least equivalent to that of a plate stem, and all joints and connections are to be at least that effective.
