The influence of pH on the kinetics of ozonization of aqueous solutions of sodium lignosulfonate (LS) in a bubbling reactor was studied. The effective rate constants and stoichiometric coefficients of the reaction between ozone and LS were determined. The influence of pH on the effective rate constants and the amount of ozone consumed was characterized. The stoichiometric coefficients were shown to change from 1.3 to 5.6 as pH increased from 1.0 to 8.6. Simultaneously, the effective rate constants changed severalfold. The transformations of solid lignin and aqueous solutions of LS were studied by UV and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The main stages of lignin ozonization were determined, and a mechanism for the reaction is suggested.
