Fossil Microplankton of the Bottom Sediments of the Afanasii Nikitin Seamount in the Central Part of the Indian Ocean

Microplankton (coccoliths and diatoms) from the bottom sediments of the Afanasii Nikitin Seamount area (the Indian Ocean) was examined. The species of the calcareous nannoplankton refer to the Late Cretaceous; Paleocene; Eocene; Oligocene; Early, Early Middle, and Late Miocene; Late Plicoene; and Late Pleistocene-Holocene. Within the latter period, tropical associations of diatoms were also recognized. The absenceof sediments of the major part of the Middle Miocene, Early Pliocene, and Early Pleistocene suggests probable gaps in sedimentation during these periods. In addition to the autochtonous species, nannoplankton assemblages include more ancient ones supplied from the Afanasii Nikitin Rise. All Cenozoic assemblages imply warm-water conditions in the upper water layer. The Late Pleistocene coccoliths and diatoms also provide evidence about the warm-water conditions of the microflora development.
