Geothermal Regime, Floor Tectonics, and Temperature Conditions of Hydrocarbon Generation in the Southwestern Part of the Kara Sea

The age of the lithosphere of the South Kare Basin (250 Ma) is calculated from the hat flow data. The value obtained agrees well with the geological and geophysical data suggesting the Permian-Triassic age of its riftogenic structures of a continental (not oceanic) origin. The model of the tectonic structure of the depression is justified by the geothermal data. The thickness of the mantle (110 km), basaltic (5 km), and granitic (10 km) layers were determined; these values are confirmed by the results of the seismic studies. From the heat flow vaues, the temperatures at athe boundaries between sedimentary sequences of different ages were calculated over two geological-geophysical cross sections. The values obtained are in good agreement with the temperature interval of the generation of gaseous hydrocarbons (50 deg - 70 deg) and correspond to the Cretaceous sedimentary sequences most promosing with respect to gas potential in the South Kara Basin.
