During the cold time of a year, in the Sea of Azov, the substrate surface is completely covered with a bacterial and algal film. The settling is observed from the spring months until November. The maximum species diversity, namely, barnacles, hydroids, bryozoans, rotifers, infusorians, Camptozoa, and mussels, is observed in the summer. Due to the annual succession, barnacles and hydroids dominate and comprise 55-85 and 12-45% of the colonized area, respectively. With time, the fouling becomes more uniform; barnacles, hydroids, and mussels determine the coenosis appearance. The fouling of the water-intake by hydroids makes up 100% of its area; aqueducts are occupied by barnacles (60%) and mussels (40%); filtration systems are colonized by bryozoans (60%); and buoys are covered with macrophytes (42-60%) and barnacles (32-100%).
