The comparison of the species number of the bathyal Scleractinia, Gorgonacea, and Pennatualcea within the generally accepted climatic zones revealed their maximal diversity at low latitudes. The coral polyps are dispersed there in accordance with the meridional asymmetry rule. Only a quarter of the total number of bathyal coral species live in high latitudes. The Northern Hemisphere coral fauna is much more diverse than that in the Southern Hemisphere. The coral species distribution manifests no symmetry with respect to the equator. It is concluded that the main factor determining the coral latitudinal distribution is the age of the fauna. Based on the present-day concept of the World Ocean's history and the modern pattern of the bathyal coral fauna distribution, it is assumed that the bathyal fauna is most probably younger than the abyssal coral fauna. Most likely, formation of the bathyal coral fauna started in the Plio-Pleistocene, not earlier than 1.5-2 million years ago.
