A potentiometric method was developoed for pH measurements in seawater by means of a cell without a liquid junction. Within the conventional pH scale by Pitzer (pH_c), the standard values p(a_H/#gamma#_Na)_S were assigned to three buffered systems: Na_2HPO_4-NaH_2PO_4-NaCl-H_2O of m_HA = m_A = 0.025; TRIS-TRISHCl-NaCl-H_2O of m_TRIS = m_TRISHCl = 0.04 for any NaCl molality; and TRIS-TRISHCl-seawater (TRIS-SW) of m_TRIS = m_TRISHCl = 0.04. By means of a cell without a liquid junction composed of two glass electrodes (GE) osensitive to H~+ and Na~+ ions, a good agreement was shown between the three systems treated. Whereas nowadays no dissociation constants of carbonic acid with respect to the pH_c-scale are available, the buffered system TRIS-SW and the cell GE-Na~+ |studied (standard) solution)| H~+-GE are advocated for the measurements of pH values in seawater with respect to the concentration pH scale (pH_T). The results of the pH_T measurements for the Sea of Japan obtained aboard R/V Prof. Khromov by two techniques-potentiometry with a cell without a liquid junction and spectroophotometry-are compared and discussed.
