In the recent geological period,the sea coasts of Russia,which are approximately 60 000 km long,were repeatedly involved in transgressions of the ocean that penetrated deeply into the lowlands.During the regressions of the ocean,vast shelf territories were drained and continental conditions were established.The history of the research of the sediments of the ancient marine transgressions,which started from the studies by the outstanding naturalist P.Pallas,includes thousand of studies in all the seas at the Russian borders.Comprehensive studies of individual regions (Troitskii,Danilov,Fedorov,Petrov,Pavlidis) and research of special character (Polyakova,Pushkarev,Nevesskii,Kap-lin) are among them.
