Variations in the Magnitude of the Geomagnetic Dipole in the Interval of Chrons C1-M43

The data from the international database of the virtual dipole moment (VDM) values supplemented by the values from recent publications are used as the basis for studying the variations in the virtual dipole moment values in the interval of chrons C1-M43 (0-162.45 My B.P.) and earlier down to 200 My B.P.The results obtained using the method of a running mean demonstrate that,during the past 200 My,the distribution of the VDM is characterized by a positive linear trend from 3.5 x 10~(22) A m~2 to 6.2 x 10~(22) A m~2.Against the background of its linear growth,fluctuations with a periodicity of 45 My are distinguished,such as the Meso-zoic minimums in the intervals 165-144 My B.P.(chrons M19-M43),129-120 My B.P.(chrons MO-M8),and 75-86 My B.P.(chron C33 and the beginning of chron C34).In the Cenozoic time,this kind of minimum is found in the interval 40-14 My B.P.(chrons C18-C5AD).The distribution of the VDM is strictly related to the variations in the ancient geomagnetic field and can be taken into consideration when analyzing the magnetization values in the models of the inversive magnetic layer of the sea floor.
