A detailed interpretation of the data of high-precision continuous seismic profiling allowed us to reveal for the first time a buried landslide within the sedimentary sequence of the distal part of the Bengal alluvial fan.The formation of this kind of a landslide body untypical of deep-water ocean basins was probably caused by special regional conditions.The area of the deformations of the Indian Ocean lithosphere located here is characterized by high recent intraplate tectonic activity,which is anomalous for abyssal basins.This also refers to the extremely high intraplate seismicity.In addition to the compression pulses postulated by various scientists,the processes of postsedimentary redeposition of the sediments also seem to play an important role in the formation of the structure of the sedimentary cover of the Mid-Indian Basin of the Indian Ocean.In the upper layers of the sedimentary sequence of the Mid-Indian Basin,along with the processes of erosion and rede-position of the poorly lithified sedimentary matter,the formation of rather large submarine landslide bodies might occur.
