The first conference on marine geology in the USSR was held in Gelendzhik on the Black Sea coast in 1974. Since that time, such meetings have been held regularly, which is explained by the intense development of studies of the geology of seas and oceans. They resulted in extremely important discoveries (plate tectonics, the influx of endogenic matter to the oceanic bottom and formation of recent sulfide deposits, and others). Since publishing information on these discoveries is a slow process, the conferences provided their current discussion. The history of the school is presented in [1, 2].
