This study was performed within the framework of the Ocean State Program (subprogram "Antarctic Studies") during the austral summer (December 7, 2009 to February 16, 2010) on board the R/V Akademik Fedorov (55th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE)). The study was aimed to analyze the hydrological and hydrochemical structure of the Southern Ocean, and the water circulation. The main interest was paid to the shelf and continental slope of the West Antarctic Peninsula (the Pacific Antarctic) and to the location and characteristics of the major Antarctic fronts. The present study continues the research started during the International Polar Year of 2007/2008 and fulfills the international programs CLIVAR (Climate Variability and Predictability) and CLiC (Climate and Cryosphere).
