In accordance with the "Principles of State Politics of the Russian Federation in the Arctic over the Period up to 2020 and Further Prospects," the demarcation of Arctic marine spaces and the defense of state boundaries represent the most important strategic problems of socioeconomic development of the Russian Arctic Zone and strengthening of national security. Similar purposes were declared in the "Strategy for the Development of Russia's Marine Activity up to 2030." The top-priority problem was to carry out geological—geophysical, hydrographic, cartographic, and other works aimed at substantiating the outer limits of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Ocean. To solve this problem, the Joint Stock Company Sevmorgeo carried works under the Ark-tika-2012 project.
