The structural and functional parameters of bacterioplankton and their dynamics were evaluated in different oceanographic domains of the Eastern Bering Sea in the late spring and summer. The number of bacteria varied from 0.5 X 10~6 to 3.9 X 10~6 cells/ml, the bacterial biomass ranged from 7 to 110 mg C/m~3, and the bacterial production varied from 0.32 to 27.4 mg C/m~2 per day. The minimum values of the bacterial abundance and production were observed during the termination of the photoplankton spring bloom, and the maximum values were found at the end of July, i.e. one and half months later. The intense growth of bacterioplankton in late July was basically defined by the significant concentrations of the substrate rather than by the temperature conditions. The ratio of bacterial carbon to phytoplankton carbon ranged from 6 to 15% during the decline of the phytoplankton bloom and increased up to 250-800% (in specific cases up to more than 2000%) in the period of the bacterial maximum. The respective changes in the ratio of bacterial production to primary production were from 0.5 to 61 (98)%. The share of the primary production involved in the bacterial food web varied from 1-4% in the time of the spring bloom termination to 27-308% during the bacterial peak. In this period, primary production provided from 5 to 50% of the bacterial production and bacterioplankton consumed the organic mater accumulated in the pelagic zone during the time before the bacterial peak.
