Spatio-temporal dynamics of the white sea littoral harpacticoid community

The distribution of Harpacticoida over a sandy intertidal flat of Gryaznaya Inlet (Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea) was studied on the scales from a few centimeters to 27 m. Two levels of patchiness were found: the first one, on the scale of a few centimeters, is caused by the divergence of the patches of individual species, while the second one,on scales greater than 1 m, is related to the proportion of the dominant species in the community. The microscale aggregations were less than 4 cm~2 in size and the dense patches of different species never overlapped. The lifetime of an individual microscale patch was not longer than one day, while mesoscale aggregations exist over several weeks. Small-scale inhomogeneities are shown to dominate the general pattern of the spatial distribution of the littoral harpacticoids. The temporal component of the variability is significantly weaker than the spatial one.
