An analysis of the distribution of the instant relative spreading rates from a schematic of chrons C1-C18 compiled for the Southeast Indian Ridge in the Crozet Basin allows us to refine the features of the geodynamics of the Antarctic plate over the past 40 My. Regular spreading in the western part of the Southeast Indian Ridge started no earlier than 41.9 My PB. The southward movement of the Antarctic plate decelerated with time; it was accompanied by an accumulation of intraplate stresses. The evidence on jumps of the ridge axis and incorporation of northern portions of the newly formed oceanic crust to the southern portions of the same age was found, which is reflected in the asymmetry of the spreading process on the flanks of the ridge.
