Liberibacter carried on the wings ofTomato/Potato Psyllid (TPP) has devastated tamarillo orchards in the north of the country and cut the fruit volumes marketed over the winter, domestically and for export. Some big orchards have lost thousands of trees and now need to replant during the summer while redoubling vigilance against the deadly disease/pest combination. However despairing growers are not without hope — a vigorous research effort by Plant & Food Research is underway, with a lot of help from much larger Horticulture New Zealand product groups. Also, the shortage of tamarillos has lifted the market presentation and prices.
