Hawke's Bay pipfruit crop has weathered a raft of spring frosts and is looking exceptionally good. The season is running slightly earlier than normal, by just four days, AgFirst consultant Ross Wilson believes. A massive reduction in volumes last season, coupled with good markets in Europe and US resulted in the highest payouts in recent years. The national crop reached just 14.8 million tray cartons, much of the reduction being caused by spring frosts that substantially reduced Braeburn volumes andresulted in small-sized Royal Gala apples.
