摘要

Adapting to climate change needs careful consideration at the national and regional levels as well as individual business planning. While understandably most interest is focussed on the Emissions Trading Scheme and its likely impacts, a MAF/ industrybody is also working on a five-year adaptation plan. And this is not just all about adapting to the likely negative impacts of climate change. Most things are relative and relative to other nations. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) estimates the following percentage changes to agricultural production by 2050 (see figure 1): So, relatively, we stand to fare well from climate change - from a straight production viewpoint and putting the implication of the ETS aside. However, most of this production gain of 1 % is due to the pastoral sector involving a longer growing season.
