Establishment of a set of "best practice" guidelines for the kiwiberry supply chain will be undertaken to promote a good marketing outcome in coming seasons. Kiwiberry marketer Freshmax Ltd is working in partnership with Plant & Food Research scientists to develop the best methods for handling the fruit to be exported to Asian and European markets. Freshmax division manager Tracey Burns says they hope to extend the marketing period of the fruit, which has a short selling season. Freshmax holds the marketing rights for the Plant & Food-bred Hort Gem series, which comprises four varieties. The most commonly planted of these is K2D4, or Tahi. With better storage and production characteristics, it is hoped Tahi will enhance the marketing possibilities of the fruit.
