If the RSE scheme was canned, Nelson orchardist David Easton reckons he would be looking for an exit strategy. As he enters his fourth season with the scheme and 40 percent of his harvesting workforce made up of Samoan and Tongan workers, he estimatesthey have lifted productivity by 20 percent and removed a load of stress. He has nothing but praise for the group that make up 32 of the 70 staff his orchard will employ this season, including nine permanent staff. The balance is made up of casual Kiwiworkers and overseas travellers on holiday visas, and David points out that it's the latter that have been replaced by RSE workers - rather than Kiwis.
