New Zealand-developed system of forensic food identification is proving its worth in fighting the pervasive global problem of food-identity fraud. The Dunedin-based global science company Oritain recently launched its food provenance system, which provides irrefutable forensic proof of region of origin. By contrast, other traceability systems that rely on identity markers that can be copied, lost or otherwise tampered with. Oritain's general manager Mike Darling says plants and animals carry stable isotopic profiles in their chemical make-up, reflecting the environmental properties of the area in which they grew. This geochemical signature remains intact even when produce is combined with other ingredients and processed.
