Harvest time in the McKnights blueberry patch at Hamurana is a real community affair. For the past 11 seasons Bruce and Cherryl McKnight have opened up their blueberry cages to allow the public to pick their own. It's an eagerly anticipated event around Rotorua and beyond. When the McKnights took over their 4.2ha block, they first had lot of work to do to revive the neglected bushes. The general state of the property attested to the amount of work needed to maintain a lifestyle block and what happenswhen people get too busy off the property says Bruce. The McKnights now have the 800 blueberry bushes along with 100 cherry trees and 40 feijoa trees they've put in, raise calves, and run sheep, chickens and ducks. Bruce also has three beehives, something he began to ensure pollination but which has become quite an interest. It's also the base for Bruce's business testing driver licences for big rigs.
