Could this be the year when avocado orchards that have been in temporary "sleep mode," some of them for three seasons, bounce back into production? Hugh Moore, chairman of both the Avocado Growers' Association and the Avocado Industry Council said inmid-November it was a bit early to get excited but the signs were there for a good fruit set. "In the Bay of Plenty we've had a wet winter and spring, with spring temperatures a bit warmer than recent years and all the signs are good. Flowering is at least three weeks later than last year and it has been much the same for avocado orchards further north. There have been other seasons when flowering extended over a long period but it's a long time since we had a flowering begin as late as this."
