Our co-op goes back a long way to before the formation of the New Zealand Feijoa Growers Association. These growers pooled their resources to supply the processing market, although it's true we did try a central packhouse concept for fresh supply butfound it uneconomic at the time — 30 years ago — and reverted to supplying bulk-processing feijoa only. Brian Boon was the original leader, followed by Brian Carter, a successful dairy farmer and organic kiwifruit grower who relinquished the position of chairman due to his expanding dairy empire. I was his understudy and took over the chairmanship 10 years ago, holding that position for seven years and then taking marketing and sales responsibilities for the next three.
