In the last issues of NZGrower and The Orchardist, HortNZ senior business manager Sue Pickering discussed why the Young Grower of the Year competition and HortNZ's annual scholarship package were important.I won't lie. Preparing for the Young Grower of the Year event was stressful. I studied a lot, and I didn't sleep much the night before. Looking back on it now though, all of that was worth it. What you gain being part of an event like this is far more than you will put in. Win or lose, it's just being part of it that counts. I know that sounds like a new-age cliche, but if I lost out to those three guys, I wouldn't be ashamed of it, because they are all sharp as darts and capable of winning. As it turnsout I didn't lose, so I want to use the profile it has given me to promote horticulture as a career for bright young things. I'd also like to promote the value of a competition like Young Grower of the Year to people already within the industry, and wondering how they will take it to the next level.
