Dalmatian fruitgrowers have made a big contribution to the development of Auckland, but their ranks are fast thinning. Here Glenys Christian speaks to two stalwarts about their family history and the changes over a century. The first person from the village of Podgora, in the Croatian province of Dalmatia, to arrive in West Auckland was John Vela who established a commercial vineyard in West Coast Road in 1901. Like most of those who followed him he worked in Northland digging kauri gum to earnthe money to buy the land, but had none left over to live on.
