Growers who had good quantities of avocados thrived in the recently completed season 2003-2004, with record prices on the domestic and export markets. Exports were only a little over 1 million trays - the lowest for four years, but prices were the bes t in a decade or more! This means that the long awaited major increase in volumes is still frustrating the industry as cold and dry conditions inhibit fruit set. Fruit quality was generally good, with an absence of the ridging which was a headache in 200 2-2003. However, the weather dealt a severe blow to some growers. "Some have not had a crop in two years," said Hugh Moore, chairman of the Avocado Growers Association and the Avocado Industry Council.
