Nelson growers have been working hard to keep pace with the end-of-season harvest, as the Braeburn in particular have been coming in "fast and furious", Pipfruit. NZ Nelson representative Ian Palmer said. But the woes of pear growers and packers continue, as pack outs look to be 50 percent down. High winds across the region early in the season did considerable damage to the crop, and following less-than-great seasons over the last two years, some growers will be re-thinking their options, Mahana grower and packhouse operator Jim Thawley said. "Most pear growers are fairly unhappy with what's being packed, especially when we're usually aiming for 80 to 90 percent pack outs."
