Phil Alison was not one to back away from an issue. If something needed to be confronted, then he was up for the job. The retiring chairman of Pipfruit New Zealand has been the public face of the industry for seven years; he has relinquished the roleto deputy Ian Palmer, and severs his ties with the organisation in January. He believes his refusal to back away from some issues has led to confrontation. "But that is my personal philosophy and that is the way I'll be until the day I die," he says. His time as chairman of the industry's leading body has been one of enormous change, some big gains and some big losses.
