In 2007 a ZESPRI grower poll found that 51 percent of growers had access to broadband. When the same question was asked late in 2010 this access had increased to 76 percent of growers having access to broadband and 90 percent of growers having accessto the internet. This is a definite improvement. But is this good enough? In my view it is not. The kiwifruit industry's payments system and supply chain are sophisticated and complex. This is to ensure that market signals reach growers and that the mosteffective and efficient supply chain possible is utilised to maximise growers' returns and maintain product value. Broadband is needed for a grower to access information about the supply chain and payments system. This not only includes general information about payments and the supply chain, but specific information about the grower's own fi-uit and payments.
