Intensive sampling of apple leafcurling midge numbers in the Nelson region over a three-year period by Don Sinclair Research Fellowship holder Jason Smith has revealed some interesting data about the life stages of this pest. Jason has been completing a three-year Ph.D on control of the midge through the Ecology and Entomology group at Lincoln University. The study has been taking place on three properties, each growing Royal Gala and Braeburn, monitoring apple leafcufiing midge populations and tree growth weekly on approximately 30-odd weeks of the season.
