With various bureaucratic local body authorities flexing their muscle on water availability for irrigation, this topic is high on growers' minds at present. While tightening of water supply for irrigation is a relatively new phenomenon for New Zealandgrowers, it is a well-established limitation to production in many other countries that are not blessed with the water supply New Zealand has. Consequently there has been a tremendous amount of research around the world into orchard water management with those countries that have been short of water for a long time leading the way, particularly Israel, Australia and South Africa.
