IN TAINAN COUNTY, SOUTHWEST of Taiwan's capital Taipei, sugar cane fields have been transformed into the Taiwan Orchid Plantation, site for the annual International Orchid Show. The Taiwan Orchid Plantation is a government-organized area developed tooffer commercial orchid growers low-cost land and loans, a step to increase Taiwan's already impressive export income from orchid crops. Part of the TOP 395,400 square-yard (330,570-square-meter) area is a modern exhibition center (International Flora Exhibition Center) with several halls where the International Orchid Show is held. The orchid growing area around Tainan equals 40 percent of the total agricultural production land in Taiwan, R.O.C.
