The tyre industries primarily aim to make a continuous development in the following areas: (a) increased durability, (b) better fuel economy, and (c) improved safety. The above-mentioned requirements can only be achieved by improving the wear resistance, rolling resistance, and wet skid resistance, which basically construct the so called 'magic triangle' of the tyre performance. Carbon black and silica have been used for many years as the main reinforcing fillers, that enhance the usefulness of rubber and rubber-based products. Both carbon black and silica fillers have their own advantages. For low rolling resistance and high wet skid resistance, a new generation carbon silica dual phase filler (CSDPF) of 4000 series, commercially known as CRX 4210 has been extensively studied in this project taking carbon black and silica as reference compounds. The mechanical properties indicating the reinforcement of tyre tread compounds, such as tensile strength, tear strength, abrasion resistance, crack growth resistance, heat build-up, rolling resistance, etc were determined. This new CSDPF shows higher polymer-filler interaction and lower filler-filler interaction (which is an indicative of better 'Payne effect') as relative to the conventional fillers like carbon black or silica used in tyre tread compounds. The new filler also shows significant improvement in wet skid resistance over the existing products. In brief, when this filler is introduced in passenger tyre tread compounds, the compromise between rolling resistance, wear resistance, and wet skid resistance was significantly improved as compared to the conventional fillers. Bis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-tetrasulfide (TESPT), the coupling agent plays an important role when CSDPF is used as filler.
