Eighteen upland rice varieties of Asian and African origin were studied to understand genetic divergence among these genotypes for 15 yield attributing characters and 20 selected root, shoot and leaf characters associated with drought tolerance. Wider diversity for yield components compared to drought components was recorded among these genotypes. Aits varieties had low diversity for yield components. Cluster mean value of 15 quantitative traits related to grain yield indicated that variety Vandanamaintained proper balance between different yield components. The choice of this genotype as donor in hybridization programme vrithjapoiiica could give fruitful results in developing high yielding drought tolerant genotypes for uplands. Based on selected root, shoot and leaf characters, coexistence of japonica and inclica, indica and A?s, and Aus and japanica rices in one cluster was identified. Placement of 4 highly drought tolerant traditional genotypes belonging to Aits and japonica varietal group in one cluster suggested that basic mechanism of adaptation under upland condition was the same in two geographical regions.
