Effect of crop establishment and tillage practices on the productivity of rice-wheat cropping system

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of crop establishment methods (rice), tillage practices (wheat) and weed control measures (rice and wheat) on the productivity of irrigated rice-wheat cropping system. Among the crop establishmentpractices adopted for rice, transplanting resulted in significantly higher yield than direct seeding under dry or puddled conditions during wet season, 1993, while all the methods of crop establishment gave similar yields during wet season, 1994 and 1995. Direct seeding of rice resulted in higher yields of succeeding wheat crop than transplanting during 1993-94 and 1995-96, while all the crop establishment methods were identical in influencing the grain yield of wheat in 1994-95. With regard to the tillage practices adopted in wheat, conventional tillage recorded maximum yield of wheat in all the years. But, its effect on the yield of succeeding rice crop was significant only in 1994. Weed control measures did not influence grain yield of rice significantly. However, chemical weed control gavesignificantly higher yield of wheat over manual weed control during 1993-94 and 1995-96 but not during 1994-95.
