Chemical herbicides in wet-seeded rice were evaluated in an experiment in 1995 wet season and 1996 dry season at the Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad, with seven herbicide formulations including safener and combinations along with two hand weedings and unweeded control. Highest grain yields of 3.85 and 4.23 t ha~(-1), respectively, during wet and dry seasons were recorded by butachlor + safener @ 1.0 kg a.i. ha~(-1), followed by pretilachlor + safener, with low dry weed biomass, negligible weed index and high weed control efficiency. Butachlor alone recorded significantly lower grain yield and higher weed biomass than butachlor with safener usage. Two hand weedings recorded low yields because weedings were done at fixed dates, irrespectiveof the weed intensity. Unweeded control recorded lowest grain yield of 0.50 and 0.19 t ha"1 during the two seasons, indicating the intensity of weed problem, necessitating the weed management. Thus, under, wet-seeded conditions, butachlor + safener @ 1.0-1.5 kg a.i. ha~(-1) and pretilachlor + safener @ 0.4-0.6 kg a.i. ha~(-1) 3 days after sowing can be recommended for effective weed management in rice.
