Identification of versatile fertility restorer genotype(s) for diverse CMS lines of rice (Oryza saliva L)

Thirty-five crosses, generated in a Line CHI Tester mating design involving seven CMS lines (belonging to 4 different cyto-sterile sources) and five restorer genotypes (each reported to be specific for a particular sterile cytoplasm), were evaluated to identify the pollen parent(s) having wide fertility restoration capacity. The restorers were ranked based on fertility percentages of the cross combinations following a specific scale. The genotype IR 71604-4-4-3-8-7-3-3-3 was found to have wide fertility restoration capacity and restored 80% or above fertility in four CMS lines. Ranking of restorers in cross combinations for grain yield and yield components was also carried out taking into consideration the statistical significance of difference between mean values. Following this innovative ranking procedure, the genotype IR 73885-1-4-1-3-6 got the top rank followed by IR 71604-4-4-3-8- 7-3-3-3. These two genotypes can form potential pollen parents for developing heterotic rice hybrids in combinations with CMS lines carrying diverse sources of cytoplasmic male sterility in different nuclear background.
