Look at shade as an opportunity, not a problem, says Joe Swift, and try this creative and colourful design to lighten gloomy spots. Why is shade seen as a problem by some gardeners? I relish the opportunity to plant in shade, as I can use a range of my favourite plants and combine them creatively for interest at key times of the year. Early spring is ideal for a lot of shade-loving plants as many of them thrive in woodland conditions, taking advantage of the low winter light levels by coming into flower before the foliage of trees shades them out. Most of us have some shade in our gardens, be it under trees, next to boundaries or on the north and east side of houses and blocks of flats.
