摘要

The functional significance of vocalisation mimicry in songbirds has been extensively studied and reviewed (Dobkin 1979, Baylis 1982). Within species, mimicry can enhance song repertoire, an important aspect in mate attraction. For example, male GreatReed-warblers Acrocephalus arundi-naceus with the biggest repertoire have increased the likelihood of extra-pair copulations and have enhanced post-fledging offspring survival (Hasselquist et al. 1996). Across species, mimicry may potentially deceive competitors and enemies, for example predators and brood parasites (Ferguson et al. 2002), resulting in interspecific territorial exclusion ('competitive acoustic mimicry' — Dobkin 1979). In general, the response of an individual of one species to the territorial call of another is accepted as evidence for competitive acoustic mimicry. Territorial male White-crowned Sparrows Zonotrichia leucophrys react similarly to the playback of a conspecific call and a mimicked call produced by a Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia (Catchpole and Baptista 1988). By mimicking the call of White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows might prevent White-crowned Sparrows from entering the 'occupied' territory and thereby eliminate possible interspecific competition.
