The White-necked Picathartes, Picathartes gymnocephalus, is a vulnerable West African forest endemic, which occurs only in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana (Hayman et al. 1995; Collar et al. 1994) and whose taxonomic antecedents are still unresolved (Sibley & Monroe 1990). The species has only one congener, the Grey-necked Picathartes, P. oreas, which occurs in Bioko, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Nigeria (Butynski & Koster 1989; Collar et al. 1994). The two species of Picathartes breed colonially in mud nests on cave roofs and rock faces in groups of up to 40 pairs; an uncommon nesting ecology for forest birds (GlanviUe 1954; Grimes 1976, pers. obs.) Picathartes gymnocephalus is poorly studied in the wild. The only published data on body measurements are from six specimens collected over 50 years ago (Bannerman 1948). I studied the ecology and behaviour of the species for over seven years in Sierra Leone.
