The ranging behaviour of a tropical forest terrestrial insectivore: the Scaly-breasted Illadopsis

I radio-tracked 50 adult male territory holders of the Scaly-breasted Illadopsis Illadopsis albipectus in three areas with differing forest structure in Budongo, Forest,western Uganda, in order to relate aspects of ranging behaviour to generalised human impacts on forest structure. Birds followed a regular daily pattern, singing from a core area for up to two hours from dawn and then foraging for the rest of the day throughout their home range. Density (estimated using Dirichlet tessellations based on core singing areas) was higher and home ranges (100% minimum convex polygons) were smaller in degraded forest compared with both primary forest and less degraded selectively logged forest, but these differences were small. Home range size (1.21 to 1.81 ha) did not correlate with density (36.5-46.5 territories/km(2)). Overlap in home ranges was highest in degraded forest but very low in general. Birds in degraded forest had larger home ranges in the dry season compared with the wet season.
