Millet feedingis known to damage liver and kidney tissue but its effects on other tissues have not been evaluated. We report clinical effects and histopathologic changes in cardiac, pulmonary, splenic, intestinal and testicular tissues in native bred sheep and goats fed foxtail millet for 9 weeks. Twelve healthy male sheep and goats were kept under closed roof against sun exposure. The animals were adapted for 2 weeks and then fed hay and foxtail millet ad libitum respectively for 9 weeks. Rectal temperature, heart and respiratory rates were monitored daily. Some animals showed clinical signs of hepatogenous photosensitisation. The animals were euthanized at 9 weeks for necropy and histopathology. Congestion was found in heart tissue of sheep with multifocal necrosis and infiltration by mononuclear inflammatory cells in cardiac cells. Minor mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in cardiac muscle of goats. Mild acute enteritis was observed in intestinal tissues of sheep. Hemosiderin pigmentation was seen in the spleen of a sheep. No lesions were observed in lung of sheep but interstitial pneumonia was observed in lung tissue of goats. In goats, no specific lesions in intestine, spleen and testicles were observed. The findings suggest that foxtailmillet feeding may damage cardiac tissue in sheep and goats. The findings need to be interpreted with caution as no normal feed controls were used.
