As part of the programme to overhaul Europe’s market surveillance and product safety regulations announced on 13 February, the European Commission has committed to revising its General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) 2001/95/EC.1 This significant piece of legislation governs the safety of all consumer products sold in the EU which are not subject to their own specific harmonised legislation. For the majority of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) such alternatives do exist in the Low Voltage, R&TTE, Medical Device directives or similar legislation; however certain fringe electrical products not in scope of these may be subject to the GPSD as a default.
